A Call for Safety: Dr. Mehjabeen Nabi’s Message to Parents and Youth Amid Rising Road Accidents in J and K
Road accidents involving young people have become a tragic reality in Jammu and Kashmir. In just the first nine months of 2024, the region witnessed over 4,457 accidents, leading to 621 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries. Reckless driving, challenging road conditions, and the growing number of vehicles have all contributed to this alarming trend, with fatalities spiking in high-traffic areas like Srinagar and Jammu.
Statement from Dr. Mehjabeen Nabi, addressing parents and children directly:
Message to Parents
“As a mother and an advocate for the safety of our youth, my heart aches for every family who has lost a child or witnessed their child’s suffering due to road accidents. Every journey that our children take, whether to school or to see friends, should be a safe one. I urge you to sit with your children, not just to caution them but to share stories of those we’ve lost. Help them understand the importance of cautious driving, wearing helmets, and using seatbelts. We must remind them of the dangers that surround them on the road, while holding them close and guiding them to make safe choices. Together, let’s protect our children, keep them safe, and nurture their dreams.”
Message to Young People
“My dear young friends, you are the pride of Kashmir, and your dreams light up the future of this beautiful valley. Each one of you holds so much potential and hope, but one reckless moment on the road can change everything. Please, I ask you from my heart—drive safely, wear helmets, and remember that life is precious. Your family, your friends, and your community need you. Let your courage and energy be used to make a positive impact, not to be lost on a dangerous road. I believe in you and am here to support you in any way to make our roads safer for everyone.”
